College to Mark Black List Anniversary
SUNY Oneonta has announced the formation of a group that will develop programming to mark the 20th anniversary of the “Black List.” The September 4 Commemoration Committee will convene this semester and work through the summer to prepare for the event, which will be held in September.
The Black List was the name given to public outrage that occurred after September 4, 1992, when the college shared information about all of its male African American and Latino registrants with the New York State Police, who were seeking suspects as part of a criminal investigation. The event drew national attention and raised civil rights, racial profiling and privacy issues.
“The Black List represents SUNY Oneonta’s low point, reverberating even now as we continue to address issues related to campus climate,” wrote SUNY Oneonta President Nancy Kleniewski in a campus-wide announcement. “And while the institution affirmed our shared commitment to equity and inclusion in 2010 by incorporating diversity as a pillar of the strategic plan, we shall never forget the events of September 4, 1992, and their impact on our college.”
The president named Dr. Gretchen Sorin, director of the Cooperstown Graduate Program, and Dr. Arthur Dauria, a professor in the college’s Department of Communication Arts, as co-chairs of the September 4 Commemoration Committee. She added that the college has committed to funding speakers, performers, research and other efforts in support of the committee’s work.
